Kyle Smethurst
Kyle Smethurst is a master's level intern at Haven, currently in his final year at Virginia Commonwealth University's Master's in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling program. After graduation, he will pursue licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor.
After completing his undergraduate degree at James Madison University, Kyle studied at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and completed his Master of Divinity degree. As a pastor, he worked with youth and families for 12 years. He has also worked with teens through Intercept Health, as well as Latine youth through Vida Joven. He has mentored youth struggling with substance use, life transitions, family crises, church hurt, faith deconstruction, identity and more. His experiences have inspired him to study counseling and gain the clinical expertise to offer evidence-based practices for both English- and Spanish-speaking kids and teens.
Kyle seeks to utilize and integrate multiple play therapy approaches, including child-centered play therapy. He is passionate about offering engaging, developmentally appropriate services at a reduced rate! He considers it a great privilege to journey with youth through the challenges of growing up. Kyle is also a counseling intern in the Pediatric Complex Care Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Richmond.
Outside of counseling, Kyle enjoys spending time with his family, playing sports and watching movies.
